MEB Sponsors “Designing Our Coastal Resilience” on Earth Day

This Earth Day, MEB was proud to sponsor Designing Our Coastal Resilience, hosted by AIA Coastal Virginia.

The event welcomed members of the Hampton Roads design and environmental communities to share ideas and highlight efforts supporting long-term coastal resilience.

The program featured Jay Bernas, GM/CEO of HRSD, as the keynote speaker. He discussed HRSD’s mission and the SWIFT Initiative—an innovative water treatment program that replenishes the Potomac Aquifer with purified wastewater. These advanced techniques help address critical regional issues, including sea level rise, saltwater intrusion, and aquifer depletion. We are proud to contribute to these sustainable water treatment efforts through our work on SWIFT projects.

Attendees also heard from local students of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools Environmental Studies Program. These students have spent the year stepping out of the classroom and into the community, developing research projects that address real environmental challenges facing the region. Their presentations included Pleasure House Point Research, Back Bay Project Updates, and Designing for an Ecosystem, each highlighting thoughtful, community-focused approaches to coastal resilience and sustainability.
