August is National Wellness Month, and we’re spotlighting Sarah Kert, MEB’s Nutrition and Wellness Coordinator.
Sarah plays a vital role in ensuring MEB’s ongoing commitment to employee wellbeing through programs and initiatives that support health both on and off the job. Our wellness program is designed with inclusivity in mind, offering a range of resources for every employee, no matter their background, lifestyle, or needs. Free gym memberships, onsite wellness office hours, monthly challenges, stress-management tools, and safety trainings are just a few of the many offerings. The program also includes smoking cessation support, employee assistance programs (EAP), and wellness events that address both physical and mental health.
“Wellness in the context of my role means meeting employees where they’re at and helping them feel and function at their best, both at work and at home,” Sarah says. “That might look like a custom workout program to support strength goals, a 1:1 conversation about nutrition habits, simple strategies for improving sleep or managing stress, introducing new protein-rich snacks for the workday, or even showing someone how to use a lacrosse ball for Myofascial Release (MFR) to reduce pain.”

“What I love most about my role is getting to know all different kinds of people, what their day-to-day looks like, and helping them find real-life, sustainable ways to improve their health and quality of life.”
In the construction industry, wellness takes on even greater importance. The physical and mental demands of the job are significant, whether someone is in the field or the office. Sarah recognizes the stakes are high, saying, “A healthier team is a more productive, focused, and resilient one. I’ve always been blown away by the longevity of so many MEB employees, and investing in their wellbeing sends a powerful message: we value you. Prioritizing wellness builds a culture where people feel seen and supported as human beings, not just as job titles.”

One standout initiative this year was the Heat Illness Safety Training Sarah developed in partnership with the Safety Department. The training focused on symptom awareness, hydration and fueling strategies, and long-term risk reduction. “We’ve gotten a lot of great participation from the guys as well. It’s great to see them take ownership of their own health, look out for one-another, and share personal experiences with their teammates.”
