This summer, Taylor returned to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard to work on the P-1062 Dry Dock 3 Modernization project, where no two days looked exactly the same. Because of what he learned last summer while interning at MEB, Taylor said he was able to hit the ground running and build his skills.
Most mornings started with a meeting, followed by a walk through the jobsite to see the progress being made, take photos, and check in with the crews. Back in the office, he reviewed plans and specifications, ordered materials, and worked on submittals. He also returned to the field throughout the day to take measurements, document progress, and ask questions. The mix of field and office work helped him connect project documents to the work taking place on site.
Hands on LearningOne of Taylor’s favorite parts of the internship was being trusted with meaningful assignments. His responsibilities changed based on what the team was working on, giving him the chance to learn about several parts of the project instead of repeating the same task each day. “I feel like it’s rare for interns to be so trusted and supported, it prepares me for my future very effectively.”
Taylor said the close relationships and family dynamic with the P-1062 team were clear from the start. Everyone was open, willing to answer questions, and easy to work with. He also noticed how regularly the team discussed quality and safety. Seeing the documentation and additional precautions required at an active shipyard helped him understand the attention that goes into completing the work safely and correctly. “Matt Keene [Senior Project Engineer], Riley Sweeney [Senior Project Engineer], Gary Worley [Project Executive], and everyone have been so kind, open, willing to help, and fun to work with,” Taylor said. “I could not have asked for a better group of people to spend the last two summers with.”
