Ready Before It’s Needed: MEB’s Proactive Safety Planning at Proctors Creek

At MEB, Safety Matters means preparing in advance for the unexpected.

Last week, our team on the Chesterfield Proctors Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Flow EQ, Screening & Grit Improvements project welcomed Chesterfield County Fire/EMS/Rescue, Police/Sheriff’s Office, and other emergency response personnel to site for a lunch-and-learn and tour.

Responders reviewed MEB’s Emergency Action Plan and learned about site access points, construction activities, and site-specific hazards. With construction expected to continue through 2030, early coordination is especially valuable as the project moves through different phases and site conditions change.

“It’s important for us to make site visits like this, so we’re prepared in the event of an emergency,” said Lauren Russell, Public Information Officer for Chesterfield Fire. “It helps ensure we have the right contacts, we know where we can enter, and it ensures that we are prepared, no matter what happens here.”

MEB Site Safety & Health Officer, Brandon Bruner, OHST, CHST, STS-C, SMP commented on how knowing the site before an emergency occurs can make a meaningful difference for responders. “By bringing emergency personnel onto the site before an emergency occurs, MEB is helping establish familiarity with the project and allowing responders to better understand the environment they may be called upon to operate in. It helps address the ‘what if’ factor. It’s a proactive rather than reactive approach,” Bruner said.

We appreciate the time local responders took to learn about the site and support MEB’s efforts to protect our employees. We look forward to continuing to work together as the project progresses.
