Project

norfolk naval shipyard P-678 dry dock 8 saltwater system for CVN-78

There are currently no government owned dry docks on the east coast that can accommodate the increased cooling requirements of the CVN-78 class aircraft carriers. The goal of this project is to provide a saltwater distribution system with increased pumping capacity to serve the increased demand of the new aircraft carriers.

Project Details

MEB’s scope for this project includes significant saltwater piping, pump stations, and electrical distribution systems which must be constructed along with significant improvements to the existing pumpwell to properly handle the discharge requirements of the new Ford Class carriers. The new electrical distribution system will include back-up generators with fuel storage tanks. The pumpwell modifications include a new micropile supported chamber for additional drainage pumps, replacement main drain pump motors, and all new discharge piping routed through existing flumes. Pumpstation construction involves pipe pile driven foundations and deep excavations with intakes into the Elizabeth River requiring complex temporary cofferdams.
